The Laugh, by Roxanne Grooms
The Laugh, by Roxanne Grooms, 17" x 14", Mixed Media on Paper, Unframed
As in all of my paintings, the circle becomes personified to take on a role. In The Laugh, although tongue in cheek, we hide behind our smile to mask our pain to the point of disconnect. When joy arrives, the smile, the laugh, seems in-congruent to our feelings. It becomes difficult to align our expression to our feelings and truth is clouded.
Curated Description: The Laugh is an intense abstract composition done in mixed media on paper. The blue tones of the palette try to compete with the deep red background, the hand sewing, and the black lines for dominance. The abstract form is reminiscent of a creature, challenging the viewer to identify the different parts of the piece.
